Fishing the Salmon River in Upstate NY - 10-02-07
While sitting at my desk on Monday in Saratoga Springs, NY on Monday and knowing that I was missing The Montauk Blitz in a big way, I wondered how I could participate in Mother Nature's Fall Fish Dance and take one of my "places to fish in the world" off of my to-do-list. I called the Yankee Fly shop ( www.fishthesalmonriver.com ), was lucky to book a great guide John Kopy ( http://www.littlejohnjustfishes.com/ ) for the next day who happened to have someone cancel (karma), met the guide at 3:30am, reserved our spot on the river at 4 am and wet the lines at sunrise (NY law on that water). I probably caught 15 fish, but because the fishing is not technically challenging (drifting egg fly pattern in same pool about 50 feet long) I was done by around 10am. These fish are huge, a great fight even on an 8wt fly rod and have great color. This is about as close to being in Alaska as you can get within 6 hours of NYC. Definitely recommend it to anyone. Carpe Pesce! Tight Lines! JN
